Raid Class Tier List — EverQuest Legends

Raid class tier rankings for EQL — which classes are essential for raids, which are situational, and how to build the optimal raid force.

Raid Class Tier List — Who Commands the Raid?

Raid content in EverQuest Legends is the ultimate test of class effectiveness. While group content can be cleared with a wide variety of compositions, raids demand specific classes for specific roles — and some classes are simply more valuable than others when the stakes are highest. This tier list ranks all 16 classes by their raid effectiveness, considering their contribution to raid success, their demand in raid rosters, and their irreplaceability in key raid roles.

Raiding in EQL is a different beast from group content. Encounters are designed for large forces, bosses have complex mechanics, and the margin for error is thin. The class that solos brilliantly may be nearly useless in a raid, while the class that struggles alone may be absolutely essential when the raid force forms. Understanding raid class tiers helps you build a character that raid guilds want and that contributes meaningfully to raid success.

Raid Tier Criteria

Classes are evaluated for raid effectiveness on the following criteria:

  • Essentialness — Can the raid succeed without this class? Classes that fill irreplaceable roles rank higher.
  • Roster Demand — How many of this class does a typical raid need? Classes that raids need multiple copies of rank higher.
  • Unique Contribution — Does this class provide something no other class can? Unique abilities increase tier ranking.
  • Consistency — How reliably does this class perform across different raid encounters? Classes that are useful on every fight rank higher than those that shine on only specific encounters.
  • Scalability — Does this class become more or less valuable as raid content becomes harder? Classes that scale well with difficulty rank higher.

S-Tier — Raid Essentials

Cleric

The single most essential class for raiding. No raid can function without Clerics. Complete Heal chains are the primary mechanism for keeping main tanks alive against raid boss damage. Without a CH chain, the main tank dies, and without the main tank, the raid wipes. Most raids bring multiple Clerics — often three or more — to sustain the CH rotation. Additionally, Clerics provide resurrection for recovering from deaths, Symbol buffs for HP bonuses, and Aegolism for group-wide survivability. Every raid force prioritizes Cleric recruitment. See our Cleric healing guide for CH chain mechanics.

Warrior

The main tank is the raid's most critical position, and Warriors are the best main tanks in the game. Their superior HP, AC, and defensive disciplines make them the only class that can reliably tank the hardest raid bosses. An Ogre Warrior with Frontal Stun Immunity is the gold standard for raid main tanking. While raids can sometimes use Shadow Knights or Paladins as off-tanks, the Warrior's defensive discipline suite is irreplaceable for main tank duty. See our Warrior tank guide for detailed raid tanking strategies.

Enchanter

Enchanters provide two critical raid functions: crowd control on trash mobs and mana regeneration through Clarity and Brilliance lines. During trash clears, Enchanters mez adds that would otherwise overwhelm the raid. During boss fights, Enchanters provide mana regeneration that keeps healers and casters casting. The mana regeneration alone would make Enchanters valuable, but their crowd control makes them irreplaceable. Raids typically bring one to two Enchanters depending on the encounter.

A-Tier — High-Value Raid Classes

Shaman

Shamans are essential for raids because of one spell: Slow. A slowed raid boss deals dramatically less damage, which directly reduces the healing load on the CH chain. Beyond Slow, Shamans provide group stat buffs (Haste, Stamina, Dexterity) that significantly boost melee DPS, and Cannibalize gives them excellent mana sustainability for long encounters. Most raids bring at least one Shaman, and many bring two for redundancy and group coverage.

Bard

Bards provide an extraordinary range of raid utility through song twisting. During trash clears, Bards provide crowd control. During boss fights, Bards twist mana songs for healers, haste songs for melee, resist songs for AoE protection, and damage shields for tank mitigation. A skilled raid Bard essentially amplifies the entire raid force simultaneously. The limitation is that Bard songs affect the Bard's group, not the entire raid, so multiple Bards may be needed to cover all groups.

Rogue

Rogues provide the highest sustained melee DPS in the game during raids. With a Warrior main tank holding aggro, Rogues can Backstab continuously for extraordinary damage output. Rogues are the benchmark for raid melee DPS and are essential for beating enrage timers on challenging encounters. Multiple Rogues are common in raid forces.

Wizard

Wizards provide the highest burst DPS in the game, which is critical for raid burn phases. When a boss enters a dangerous enrage or when a timed mechanic requires maximum damage output, Wizards deliver the burst needed to push through. Wizards also have teleportation spells that provide raid movement utility. Their limitation is mana — sustained nuking drains mana quickly, requiring mana regeneration support from Enchanters and Bards.

B-Tier — Situational Raid Classes

Monk

Monks provide solid melee DPS and the invaluable Feign Death ability, which makes them the best pullers in the game. In raids, Monks are often the designated pullers — they single-pull mobs from dangerous packs using FD splitting. Monks also provide decent DPS and can serve as off-tanks for adds. Their value varies by encounter — some raids need skilled pulling, while others are primarily tank-and-spank affairs.

Necromancer

Necromancers provide DPS, mana regeneration through twitches, and emergency crowd control. Their pet is less reliable in raids than in solo content due to pathing issues and AoE damage. Necromancers are most valuable on long encounters where their mana sustainability and twitching ability shine. On shorter encounters, their DPS contribution is moderate compared to Wizards.

Magician

Magicians provide powerful pets for DPS, Call of the Hero for group summoning (invaluable in certain raid zones), and damage shields for tank mitigation. Their pets add meaningful DPS, and CoTH provides unique raid utility. The limitation is that pets can be unreliable in raid environments with AoE damage and complex pathing.

Shadow Knight

Shadow Knights serve as off-tanks for raid content, handling adds that need to be tanked but do not require a Warrior's defensive power. Their Feign Death pulling is valuable for trash clears. Shadow Knights are situational — some encounters require multiple off-tanks, while others need only one main tank.

C-Tier — Limited Raid Value

Paladin

Paladins serve as off-tanks and emergency healers. Their Lay on Hands can save a group from a wipe, and their healing spells supplement the main healers during heavy damage phases. Their undead-targeted spells are valuable on specific encounters with undead adds. However, their overall raid contribution is modest compared to Warriors, Clerics, or Enchanters.

Beastlord

Beastlords provide DPS from both the player and pet, plus a slow that is useful when Shamans are spread thin across groups. Their contribution is solid but not exceptional — they do not excel at any single raid role.

Druid

Druids serve as spot healers and backup support in raids. Their teleports provide travel convenience, and their damage shields add some value. However, Druid healing cannot replace Cleric healing for main tanks, and their DPS is inferior to pure caster classes. Druids are useful but not essential.

Ranger

Rangers provide tracking for finding rare spawns and decent DPS through archery and melee. Their snare is valuable for certain kiting strategies. Rangers are the most situational raid class — they shine on specific encounters that require tracking or kiting but contribute modestly on standard tank-and-spank fights.

Berserker

Berserkers provide pure melee DPS but are generally inferior to Rogues in sustained damage. Their burst damage from frenzy is useful during burn phases, but the overall raid value is limited compared to other melee DPS options.

Tips and Strategies

  • Build a raid-ready 3-class combo: Your combo should include at least one S or A-tier raid class. A Warrior-Cleric-Enchanter combo makes you the most recruitable player on any server. See our 3-class system guide for combo building.

  • Specialize in your raid role: Raiders who master their role are more valuable than those who dabble. A Warrior who perfects main tanking is more valuable than one who splits focus between tanking and DPS.

  • Maintain appropriate resist gear: Raids require specific resistances. Build and maintain resist sets for each resistance type and be prepared to swap gear between encounters.

  • Understand CH chain timing: If you are a Cleric, mastering the Complete Heal chain is the most important skill in the game. Practice the timing, communicate with other Clerics, and learn the optimal chain speed for each boss.

  • Invest in raid-focused AAs: AAs that enhance your raid role should be prioritized over general AAs. Check our best AA for each class and AA point farming guides for efficient AA investment.

  • Be reliable: Raids depend on every member being present and prepared. Showing up on time, with the right gear and consumables, is half the battle.

Common Mistakes

  • Bringing a group composition to a raid: Group compositions do not work in raids. Raids need main tanks, CH chains, crowd control, and coordinated DPS. Understanding the difference between group and raid requirements is fundamental.

  • Neglecting raid-specific gear: Resist gear, clicky items, and effect gear that is essential for raids may be useless in group content. Build a raid-specific gear set.

  • Overlooking off-tanks: Many raids require off-tanks for adds. Forgetting to assign and gear off-tanks leads to healers and casters being attacked by uncontrolled adds.

  • Not coordinating CH chains: A disorganized CH chain means inconsistent healing, which leads to main tank deaths and raid wipes. Practice and coordination are essential.

  • Ignoring trash clearing strategy: Trash mobs can wipe raids just as easily as bosses. Enchanters and Bards should crowd control trash, tanks should establish aggro, and DPS should follow kill orders.

  • Trying to DPS when you should support: Healers who try to nuke, Enchanters who try to charm instead of mezzing, and Bards who focus on damage songs over mana songs — all are common raid mistakes. Play your raid role.

Conclusion

Raid effectiveness in EverQuest Legends follows a clear hierarchy: Clerics and Warriors are irreplaceable, Enchanters and Shamans provide essential support, and DPS classes determine how quickly bosses fall. Understanding this hierarchy helps you build a raid-ready character and contribute meaningfully to your raid force's success.
