Welcome to Norrath
EverQuest Legends brings the iconic EverQuest experience into the modern era. Whether you are a veteran of the original game or a complete newcomer to the world of Norrath, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know from your very first login to taking on your first dungeon. EQL preserves the depth and challenge that made the original EverQuest legendary while introducing quality-of-life improvements, a revolutionary 3-class system, and modern graphics.
This guide covers the fundamentals: choosing your race and class, navigating the UI, understanding the game's core mechanics, and reaching your first milestones. By the end, you will have a solid foundation for your adventures ahead.
Step 1: Choose Your Race
Your race is one of the most important decisions you will make in EverQuest Legends. It determines your starting stats, racial abilities, available classes, and starting city. Each of the 10 races offers distinct advantages:
- Human: The most flexible race, Humans can choose 14 of 16 classes and start in either Qeynos or Freeport. Their balanced stats make them a solid pick for any role. If you are unsure what you want to play, Human is the safest choice.
- Ogre: Ogres have the highest strength and stamina in the game, plus the incredible Frontal Stun Immunity racial — they cannot be stunned by attacks from the front. This alone makes Ogres the best Warrior and Shadow Knight race.
- Dark Elf: High intelligence and the Ultravision racial ability make Dark Elves excellent casters. They start in Neriak, the city of the Evil faction.
- Barbarian: High strength and stamina combined with the Slam ability. Barbarians make excellent melee fighters and start in Halas.
- Erudite: The highest base intelligence race, Erudites are the natural choice for Enchanter, Wizard, Magician, and Necromancer.
- Troll: Troll regeneration provides passive HP recovery even while standing, making them excellent for soloing and tanking.
- Dwarf: High stamina and wisdom make Dwarves excellent tanks and healers. They start in Kaladim on the continent of Faydwer.
- Halfling: Free Sneak and Hide skills give Halflings unique utility. Excellent for Rogue and Cleric.
- Half Elf: Balanced stats with above-average agility. Half Elves start in Freeport or Kelethin.
- Gnome: High intelligence plus the Tinkering racial skill. Gnomes start in Ak'Anon and excel at caster roles.

Step 2: Pick Your Primary Class
EverQuest Legends features 16 classes spanning 5 archetypes (Fighter, Priest, Rogue, Mage, Hybrid). Your primary class sets the foundation for your character's combat role. The 3-class system lets you add complementary classes later — so do not stress about being locked in.
Here is a quick overview of the archetypes:
- Fighter (Warrior, Monk, Berserker): Melee-focused classes with high physical output
- Priest (Cleric, Druid, Shaman): Healing and support through spells
- Rogue (Rogue, Bard): Utility and precision damage
- Mage (Wizard, Necromancer, Magician, Enchanter): Spellcasting powerhouses
- Hybrid (Paladin, Shadow Knight, Ranger, Beastlord): Blended roles combining combat and magic
For a complete breakdown of every class with tier rankings, see our All 16 Classes Compared article.
Step 3: Complete the Tutorial Zone
Your starting city has a tutorial area that teaches movement, combat, looting, and basic quest mechanics. This is time well spent — complete all tutorial quests for free gear and experience. The tutorial typically takes 15-30 minutes and rewards you with:
- A basic weapon and armor set for your class
- Several experience levels (typically to level 3-4)
- An introduction to the quest system
- A free backpack for inventory management
Do not skip the tutorial. The gear and experience you gain here will save you significant time in the early levels.
Step 4: Understand the UI
EverQuest Legends has a comprehensive UI that may feel overwhelming at first. Here are the key elements you need to know:
- Hotbar: Drag spells and abilities here for quick access during combat. You have 10 hotbar slots by default, expandable to 50.
- Inventory: Press I to open. Manage your bags, equip gear, and use items.
- Spell Book: Press B to open. Scribe new spells and arrange your spell gems.
- Group Window: Shows party member health, mana, and status effects.
- Chat Window: Multiple tabs for different channels — say, group, guild, and tells.
- Map: Press M to open. Shows your current zone with discovered areas marked.
- Journal: Tracks active and completed quests.
Spend time arranging your UI before heading into combat. A well-organized hotbar can mean the difference between life and death in a dungeon.
Step 5: Join a Group
EverQuest Legends is built around group play. While soloing is viable with the right class combinations, the game truly shines in groups. Use the Looking for Group (LFG) tool to find other players. A balanced group typically consists of:
- 1 Tank (Warrior, Paladin, or Shadow Knight)
- 1 Healer (Cleric, Druid, or Shaman)
- 1 Crowd Control (Enchanter or Bard)
- 2-3 DPS (any damage-dealing class)
Groups earn experience faster than solo players and can tackle dungeon content that would be impossible alone. Join a guild early for consistent group opportunities.
Step 6: Explore Your First Dungeon
At level 5-10, head to Blackburrow (Qeynos area) or Crushbone (Faydwer area). These introductory dungeons teach pulling, crowd control, and group dynamics. Here is what to expect:
- Pulling: One player (ideally a Monk or Bard) separates a single enemy from a group. Pulling one mob at a time prevents wipes.
- Crowd Control: Enchanters can mesmerize additional enemies, keeping them out of the fight while your group focuses one at a time.
- Looting: Use the Need Before Greed (NBG) system — items go to the player who will use them, not the player who wants to sell them.
- Corpse Recovery: If your group wipes, you will need to return to your corpses to recover your gear. This is a core EQ mechanic that adds stakes to dungeon crawling.
Tips & Strategies for New Players
Starting out in EverQuest Legends can be challenging, especially if you are new to the MMORPG genre. Here are essential tips that experienced players wish they had known from the beginning:
- Always keep your gear repaired — Damaged gear loses effectiveness. Visit a vendor before heading into dungeons.
- Save your platinum — Do not waste money on vendor gear. Dungeon drops and quest rewards provide better equipment for free.
- Learn to feign death — If you have a Monk or Shadow Knight in your 3-class combo, feign death is the ultimate escape tool.
- Carry light sources — Dark zones like Blackburrow are nearly impossible to navigate without light unless you have Ultravision.
- Set up a hotkey for assist — Pressing F7 to assist your Main Tank ensures everyone attacks the same target.
- Do not be afraid to ask for help — The EQL community is generally helpful. Ask questions in chat or on the official Discord.
- Bind wound skill — This secondary healing skill can save your life between fights. Keep it maxed.
- Use the /consent command — If you die deep in a dungeon, using /consent allows a trusted friend to drag your corpse to a safer location for resurrection. This can save hours of difficult corpse recovery.
- Learn the /loc command — Typing /loc displays your coordinates. Write these down before dangerous fights so you can find your corpse if you die. Experienced players check /loc frequently as a habit.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
New players frequently make these errors that slow their progress or lead to frustrating experiences:
- Ignoring faction: Killing NPCs in one city can make you hostile to that city's guards. Always check faction hits before attacking. See our evil vs good factions guide for faction details.
- Overpulling: Trying to fight too many enemies at once is the number one cause of group wipes. Pull one mob at a time.
- Not scribing spells: New spells appear in your inventory as scrolls. You must scribe them into your spell book before they become usable.
- Wandering at night: Some zones have stronger enemies that only spawn at night. Stay near guards or zone lines after dark.
- Selling to the wrong vendor: Some vendors pay more for specific items. Check prices before selling valuable loot.
- Skipping the LFG tool: Trying to find groups by shouting in chat is slow. Use the LFG interface for faster results.
- Neglecting food and drink: Your character needs food and drink to regenerate health and mana. Running out causes slow recovery and eventual stat penalties. Always carry a stack of food and drink.
- Ignoring the /consider command: Right-clicking or pressing C on a mob tells you its relative strength and attitude. Fighting a mob that cons red or scowling is a quick way to die. Learn to read the consider messages carefully.
